Although we don't know who will take Sandra Day O'Connor's place on the US Supreme Court, we do know that it will not be Harriet Miers, who withdrew her name for consideration in a letter to President Bush yesterday.
Miers Withdraws
In her letter, Miss Miers expressed concern "that the confirmation process presents a burden for the White House and our staff that is not in the best interest of the country." She went on to say:
I share your commitment to appointing judges with a conservative judicial philosophy, and I look forward to continuing to support your efforts to provide the American people judges who will interpret the law, not make it.
Miers will continue serving the Administration in her current role as White House Counsel.
Pro-lifers had been largely divided over the Miers nomination since it was announced October 3. However, in light of some comments made about the importance of "self-determination" as a guiding factor on issues like abortion, pro-lifers can now agree that it is for the best that Miers withdrew her name for consideration.
Operation Rescue President Troy Newman commented, "Miers' actions today are to be commended. Her withdrawal spares the nation a contentious confirmation battle that would likely have ended in her rejection by the Senate."
Gearing Up for New Nominee
Looking to the future, Culture of Life Foundation President Austin Ruse noted,
The very potent conservative coalition—that worked so well during the Roberts nomination process—sadly was shattered in recent weeks. We have no doubt this powerful coalition will gather again for the President's next nominee.
And just who will that next nominee be? The only man who knows has vowed to let us know "in a timely manner."
Many pro-lifers' short lists include the names Samuel Alito, Michael Luttig, Michael McConnell, Janice Rogers Brown, and Edith Jones.
It may well end up being one of these five judges; however, as conservative pundit Hugh Hewitt noted in his blog, "But this president hasn't stopped liking surprises." Only time will tell.
American Girl Update
As Joe Scheidler noted in his hotline earlier this week, the League has given American Girl until November 1 to dissociate itself from Girls Inc., the girls' pro-abortion advocacy group that also supports premarital sex and contraception, and condones lesbianism.
We've received no indication as yet that American Girl intends to sever its ties with Girls Inc., and we're not holding our breath. Assuming they don't, the boycott begins Tuesday, with picketing soon to follow. Stay tuned . . .
