Happy Halloween! And Happy All Saints Day! These are two of my favorite days of the year, when I can go trick or treating with the grandchildren, now 14 of them, and Say Happy Feast Day to all my friends the next day, since they're all living saints.
Pro-Lifers Examine Samuel Alito
The talk today is centered on the Third U.S. Circuit Court Judge in Philadelphia, Samuel A. Alito, President Bush's newest nominee to the Supreme Court. Alito seems to have the conservatives elated and the liberals, the Democrats, very unhappy, which are good signs.
What we know about Alito is what everyone is getting to know, that he is a strong conservative, a practicing Catholic, argued in Planned Parenthood v. Casey that a wife should be required to tell her husband if she is considering abortion—which drove the flaming feminists into a frenzy. In ACLU v. Schundler he ruled that a Nativity Set could be displayed on city property.
Distressing is his concurring opinion in Planned Parenthood of Central New Jersey, where PP fought a ban on Partial Birth abortion in light of Stenberg v. Carhart, and Alito agreed that the ban was unconstitutional. An opinion by the Higher Court does establish a law in light of which state laws are overruled, but the question is, how far does a Christian recognize an immoral law as settled law?
Most of the pro-lifers I know would never make the high court. We would rule in favor of a State's moral law that flies in the face of a Federal Court's decision upholding an immoral law. In any event, it will be an interesting month ahead. Now, if Judge John Paul Stevens would just retire, Bush could nominate Michael Luttig, and we'd be on our way.
American Girl Boycott To Begin 11/1
On Nov. 1, if American Girl Doll has not notified our office that they have dropped Girls Inc. as a partner in fundraising projects, the Pro-Life Action League will announce a boycott against the Wisconsin based company, and plan demonstrations outside their American Girl Doll Stores in Chicago and New York.
The Girls Inc. web site is touting its good reputation as beneficial to American Girls, omitting to mention that it supports and promotes abortion, use of contraceptives and the lesbian lifestyle.
Their latest advice to friends of strong smart and bold girls, is that Girls Inc. has empowered girls for over 141 years, but that recently their mission to help girls develop self-esteem and self-reliance has become the target of "false, inflammatory statements from people who are pursuing a narrow political agenda"—referring to our protest of their link with American Girl dolls.
We stand by our protest, since along with trying to make girls smart, strong and bold, they are condoning a perverted lifestyle, promiscuity; and abortion. If they consider that helping girls to be strong and smart, they're way off base. Our protest is directed at American Girl, because of its link with Girls, Inc. Stay tuned.
Episcopalians May Split
It appears that the 2.3 million member Episcopalian Church in America is preparing for a major split next year over the issue of gay rights. Liberal Episcopalians are already laying the groundwork for seizing control of church property and replacing conservative bishops who will leave the church proper with liberal bishops.
"Via Media" (The Middle Way ), an alliance of liberal Episcopalians, have issued a "day after" blueprint to counter a milder conservative "faithful disobedience" group who oppose Gay ordinations and same sex marriage. A battle royal on homosexual rights is expected when the two groups meet next summer in Columbus, Ohio.
The Via Media say they hope their plans to take over church property will not have to be used. The provisional plans call for liberal dioceses, after declaring the diocese vacant, to take legal action to acquire church property, parish buildings and assets. Both factions expect a schism in the Church after next summer's meeting.
Troubling Statistics
Recent studies from the National Center for Health Statistics show that one third of U.S. births last year, 1.47 million, were to unmarried women. There were also approximately 1.5 million abortions last year in the U. S. Whatever ever happened to good old Commandments 6 and 5?
