Thursday 28 June - Sunday 1 July

by Joe Scheidler

Imagine our surprise Wednesday night at Ravinia Park when it was announced that the guest conductor for the closing number of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir would be Chicago's Francis Cardinal George.

Cardinal George Conducts Mormons

He did quite well conducting more than 450 Mormons, counting choir and orchestra combined. Some said that was carrying ecumenism to its furthest limits.

Incidentally, it was possibly the best concert Ann and I have ever heard. Their Battle Hymn of the Republic has been one of our favorites over the years, and it has taken on a special meaning for pro-life activists: "His Truth is Marching On," complements our spread of the "Truth Tours" across the nation. George directed "This Land is My Land."

English Girl Sues To Wear Chastity Ring

In England a sixteen-year-old high school girl is suing her school for telling her she cannot wear a ring symbolizing her commitment to chastity. She says her religious belief is being censored while Moslem women may display their faith by wearing full-face veils.

She said school authorities do not care for her Judeo-Christian teaching on chastity, while school authorities say the ring is not an absolute requirement of her religion, but that it is her own decision to wear it .

Obama Slams Religious Right

Barack Obama in a talk in Hartford Connecticut recently blamed conservatives for stealing the high ground in Religion by insisting on such things as opposing abortion and gay marriage, and promoting God as the Intelligent Designer, and keeping prayer in school, while everybody knows the real moral issues are health care and women's rights.

Obama told 12,000 members of the United Church of Christ that Conservative Republicans have wrongly painted Democrats as disrespectful of evangelical values and have thus become divisive. Obama thinks the Religious Right should drop their values a few notches and take up his social issues, so we can all get along.

The UCC was started fifty years ago and supports abortion and gay rights. Obama received three standing ovations and was cheered for three minutes at the end of his talk.

One Chicago Sun-Times columnist who thinks Obama is right is Jennifer Hunter who says the real moral issues of our time are racism and the war and health care and that things like stem cell research funding puts ideology before science and politics before the needs of the family.

Hijinks of the Anti-Religious

The Chicago Tribune's Ross Werland says there's no contest between a choice to go to church on Sunday or take a walk in the woods or a canoe trip down the river. It's back to Nature every time. What a novel idea.

Meanwhile, the Trib reports on a sad little summer camp, Camp Quest, in Clarksville Ohio, strictly for atheist kids. They climb into their bunks at night without prayer because there is no one out there to hear them. Their motto is "Beyond Belief," and they discuss "circular logic" and focus on un-intelligent evolution. Other Atheist Camps have grown up in Michigan, Minnesota, California and Ontario, Canada.

Edwin Kagin, a former Presbyterian, is the founder of the atheist camps—so atheist kids won't feel alone.

Louisiana Bill Bans Partial Birth Abortion

In Louisiana, lawmakers have already approved of a state ban on partial birth abortion. The bill creates fines of from one to ten thousand dollars and jail terms of from one to ten year for doing a partial birth abortion.

Trib Highlights Perpetual Adoration

Did you happen upon the Chicago Tribune article by staff reporter Gerry Smith on perpetual adoration at Visitation Parish in Elmhurst, where already 3,700 days or about 88,000 hours of perpetual adoration have been logged since the adoration in the chapel was begun in September 1997?

Other churches in the diocese with perpetual adoration, some fifteen, are also commended such as St. John Vienny, the first in the Diocese established by Fr. Charles Fanelli who is now at St. Thomas More. There are 49 churches with perpetual adoration in Illinois. Texas is No. l, with 64 churches, and Louisiana No. 2 with 62 churches. Illinois is third with its 49.
