As you have probably already heard, on Friday January 23, President Obama signed an executive order overturning the Mexico City Policy.
Mexico City And UNFPA Funding
President Reagan was the first president to institute the Mexico City Policy. This policy withheld funding from groups promoting abortion overseas. Because it is an executive order, the current president simply has to sign an order to overturn it—no legislature necessary. Naturally Clinton overturned the policy; George W. Bush reinstated it; now Obama has overturned it again.
Obama continues to look for more ways to use our tax dollars to promote abortion abroad under the euphemism "family planning." Next on his agenda, according to his speech last Saturday, is funding the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). Bush revoked the funding several years ago after the Population Research Institute revealed that the UNFPA worked hand in hand with those who enforce China's coercive "One Child Policy," which forces abortion and sterilization upon women who have already had their one, legal child. It's a disappointment but not a surprise.
Contraceptive Funding Pulled From Stimulus Package
What is surprising is the attempt of Henry Waxman, Nancy Pelosi, and other Democrats to introduce funding for contraceptives—which would go to Planned Parenthood—into the economic stimulus package. But—yet another surprise—the report is that President Obama called Waxman personally to ask him to take this clause out of the package.
So while Obama is pretty bad, it looks like he may not be as bad as he could possibly be. After all, he didn't reverse the Mexico City Policy on Roe v. Wade day, and he could have. Don't let down your guard, though, and don't stop praying.
March For Life News
Our trip to DC for the March for Life this year was great! We caught up with many old friends and made some new ones! We received the first shipment of our new "Sharing the Pro-Life Message" handbooks just in time to take them to Washington. We gave our very first copy to David Bereit, founder of the 40 Days for Life campaign. Our second copy went to Norma McCorvey—Jane Roe of Roe v. Wade.
